Ecocide Roundtable

The campaign to criminalise ecocide – the mass damage and destruction of nature – has gained considerable momentum in recent years following the 2021 ‘Stop Ecocide’ proposal to reform the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and to recognise ecocide as the 5th crime against humanity. The term ecocide is now widely applied to describe the ecological crisis the world is facing and the destruction of the planet such as the contamination of waterways or seabeds, the destruction of forests and ecosystems, the eradication of biodiversity and species, and harmful extraction practices (amongst others). Not only do such acts cause widespread harm to the planet itself but they also affect the enjoyment of human rights.
